Know Your Vehicle's Value and Your Discount
IDV is the maximum the insurer pays if your vehicle is stolen or totally damaged. NCB is the discount you earn for claim-free years.
IDV is estimated using the standard depreciation schedule for vehicle age. Insurers may adjust IDV within a permitted range, and for vehicles older than 5 years it is agreed between you and the insurer. Final premium also depends on engine capacity, zone, add-ons and insurer.
8 Ways to Pay Less and Claim Smoothly
- Renew before expiryA lapsed policy may need a vehicle inspection, and driving uninsured attracts penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act.
- Protect your NCBNCB is generally lost if the policy is not renewed within 90 days of expiry.
- Transfer NCB to a new vehicleNCB belongs to you, not the vehicle. Keep the old policy and sale papers to carry it forward.
- Choose IDV carefullyA very low IDV cuts premium but also cuts your payout on theft or total loss.
- Avoid very small claimsCompare the repair cost with the NCB you would lose before claiming minor damage.
- Declare CNG / LPG kits & accessoriesUndeclared fitments may not be covered and can affect a claim.
- Transfer insurance on resaleWhen you buy or sell a used vehicle, get the policy transferred to the new owner's name.
- Commercial: keep papers validValid permit, fitness certificate and the right driving-licence category matter at claim time.
Accident or Theft, We Guide You Step by Step
Accident damage Cashless at network garage
- Ensure everyone is safe and take photos of the vehicle and the spot. File a police report if a third party is involved or anyone is injured.
- Inform the insurer (or us) and register the claim before moving the vehicle for repairs.
- Take the vehicle to a network garage; the insurer's surveyor inspects and approves the repair.
- The insurer pays the garage directly; you pay only deductibles and non-covered items.
Theft Total loss claim
- File an FIR at the nearest police station immediately and inform the insurer.
- Submit the claim form, FIR copy, RC, all original keys and policy documents.
- The police issue a non-traceable report if the vehicle is not recovered.
- The insurer settles the claim up to the IDV (or invoice value with a Return to Invoice add-on).

Motor Insurance Questions, Answered
Is motor insurance mandatory?
Yes. Third-party insurance is compulsory for every vehicle driven on public roads under the Motor Vehicles Act. A comprehensive policy is optional but strongly advisable, because third-party cover does not pay for damage to your own vehicle.
What is IDV and how is it decided?
Insured Declared Value (IDV) is your vehicle's current market value as per the policy, and the maximum payout for theft or total loss. It is based on the ex-showroom price less depreciation for the vehicle's age. For vehicles older than five years, it is agreed between you and the insurer.
What happens to my NCB if I make a claim?
A claim during the year usually resets your NCB to zero at the next renewal. An NCB Protection add-on lets you keep it for a limited number of claims, depending on the insurer's terms.
My policy has expired. What should I do?
Avoid driving the vehicle until it is insured. Contact us right away. Expired policies can usually be renewed online, sometimes after a vehicle inspection. If you renew within 90 days of expiry, you generally retain your NCB.
Is zero-depreciation cover worth it?
For new and relatively new vehicles, usually yes. Without it, the insurer deducts depreciation on plastic, rubber, fibre and metal parts, so you pay a significant part of the repair bill. Many insurers offer it only up to a certain vehicle age.
What is personal accident cover for the owner-driver?
It provides compensation for death or permanent disability of the registered owner-driver due to a motor accident. It is compulsory unless you already have qualifying personal accident cover; we check this for you while issuing the policy.
How is commercial vehicle insurance different?
Commercial policies are priced on the vehicle's use (goods or passengers), carrying capacity and permit type. They can include cover for the paid driver, cleaner and goods in transit, and claims depend on valid permits, fitness certificates and the driver's licence category.
