Travel Insurance Questions, Answered
Is travel insurance mandatory?
It depends on the destination. Schengen countries and several others require travel medical insurance for a visa, and many universities require it for students. Even where it isn't mandatory, it is strongly advisable because medical costs abroad can be very high.
Does my Indian health insurance cover me abroad?
Most Indian health policies cover treatment only in India. A few premium plans offer limited global cover, but usually not trip delays, baggage loss or evacuation. A separate travel policy is the reliable option.
Are pre-existing diseases covered?
Generally they are excluded, though some plans cover life-threatening emergencies arising from a pre-existing condition up to a limit. Always declare your conditions; we compare how each insurer treats them.
Can I buy travel insurance after leaving India?
Most Indian insurers require the policy to start before you leave India. Buy it a few days before departure, ideally once your tickets are booked.
Can I extend my policy if my trip gets longer?
Many insurers allow an extension if you request it before the policy expires and there have been no claims, subject to their terms. Contact us before your end date so there is no gap.
What is not covered?
Common exclusions include pre-existing conditions (except where stated), adventure sports without an add-on, injuries under the influence of alcohol or drugs, travel against medical advice and losses that aren't reported to the authorities. Read the policy wording before you travel.
