Apply for an IPO in 6 steps
You need a demat and trading account and a UPI ID linked to your own bank account.
-
Choose the IPO
Open the IPO section in your trading account and pick an issue that's open for bidding.
-
Read the offer document
Check the business, financials, risks and the use of the money raised in the Red Herring Prospectus (RHP).
-
Enter your bid
Choose the number of lots and your price within the price band, or tick “cut-off” to bid at the final price.
-
Add your UPI ID
Use a UPI ID linked to your own bank account. Bids paid from someone else's UPI ID or bank account are not valid.
-
Approve the mandate
A request appears in your UPI app. Check the details and the verified-merchant tag, then approve with your UPI PIN by 5 PM on the closing day.
-
Money is blocked, not debited
The amount stays in your account. Only the value of shares allotted is debited; the rest is unblocked.
Timeline
From application to listing in T+3 days
Under SEBI's T+3 rule, shares list on the third working day after the issue closes.
- Open
Issue opens
Bidding starts on the opening date in the offer document.
- T
Issue closes
Retail bids close at 5 PM. UPI mandates must be approved by 5 PM.
- T+1
Allotment
Basis of allotment is finalised and approved by the exchange.
- T+2
Credit & refund
Shares reach your demat account; unused money is unblocked.
- T+3
Listing
Shares start trading on the stock exchange.
Dates for each IPO are in its offer document and on the live IPO list.
After you apply
Check your allotment status
Allotment status is usually available by the evening of T+1. Check it with your PAN or application number.
NSE
Verify your bid and allotment for issues listed on the National Stock Exchange.
BSE
Check your application status for issues listed on BSE.
Registrar
Each IPO has a registrar, named in its offer document. Its website also shows allotment status. You can find the offer documents on BSE's public issues page.
When the retail category is oversubscribed, allotment is by lottery, so you may get one lot or none. If you get nothing, the blocked money is released.
Know the risks
An IPO is not a sure profit
Listing gains aren't guaranteed
Shares can list below the issue price and stay there.
Read the RHP
Base your decision on the company's business and risks, not on hype or subscription numbers.
SME IPOs are riskier
Smaller companies, larger lot sizes and thinner trading make SME issues harder to exit.
Ignore grey-market talk
“Grey market premium” figures are unofficial and unregulated. Don't apply based on them.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I don't get any shares?
The blocked amount is released in your bank account, usually by T+2. Nothing is debited.
Can I change my bid after applying?
Yes. You can modify your bid until 5 PM on the closing day. If you change the amount, approve the new UPI request.
Can I use my family member's UPI ID?
No. The UPI ID and bank account must be in the name of the person applying. Bids paid from a third party's account are not valid.
I didn't approve the UPI request in time. What now?
Your bid won't go through and no money is blocked. Approve mandates as soon as they arrive, and always before 5 PM on the closing day.
Where can I see current and upcoming IPOs?
On the FundzBazar IPO list (opens in a new tab), which shows dates, price bands and lot sizes.
Will Sahare Wealth tell me which IPO to apply for?
No. We help you apply and track your application. We don't give IPO tips or promise listing gains; the decision is yours.
